With nimbler bikes, Harley sharpens Asia focus to revive growth

Pegged as one of the key emerging markets, Harley-Davidson has announced that in 2020, a year later after LiveWire opens the Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle range, they are going to bring out new motorcycles on a completely new platform with capacities ranging from 500 to 1250cc.

The company will continue to develop improved touring and cruiser motorcycles and launch new modular 500cc to 1250cc middleweight platform of motorcycles, starting with a 1250cc custom model and a 975cc Streetfighter model in 2020, it said.

Lastly, the brand will focus on leading the electric motorcycle market by launching Harley-Davidson's first electric motorcycle, LiveWire, in 2019.

The move will also "enable accessible price point for premium small displacement market entry", Harley-Davidson added.

The uniquely styled adventure bike, which is the first Harley Davidson of its kind, will be named the Pan America, and the company has some big plans for it.

The new adventure-touring and streetfighter/standard models are a recognition of the strong demand these segments have in Europe, and will be a key element of Harley-Davidson's plans to grow overseas.

"Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding", says Harley Davidson CEO Matthew Levatich.

Levatich acknowledged "unfortunate attention" after the company announced it would increase production in foreign countries, following retaliatory European Union tariffs prompted by tariff threats of President Donald Trump. Through the years, Harley-Davidson will consolidate lower cc segments amidst having its eye out for full size cruisers and tourers to satisfy traditional customers. During that time, the company wants to gain 2 million new riders to reverse declining sales.

The planned alliance in Asia will "leverage on world-class partner's manufacturing scale and retail footprint", the company said without disclosing further details. With India being at the fore of it, we can expect Harley-Davidson to reach out for the people who fancied the brand only from bedroom wall posters and make them ride it in reality. The Motorcycle Industry Council says the median age of US motorcycle owners increased from 32 to 47 since 1990.
