Barack Obama launches scathing attack on Donald Trump

When most Republican elites who are skeptical of Trump use the word "normal", they have in mind the policy agenda supported by Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. "The consequences of any of us sitting on the sidelines are more dire".

The former president said both parties had, at times, been "infected" with the kind of politics he said the nation should abhore.

"We're supposed to stand up to discrimination", Obama said, appearing baffled.

Former President Barack Obama speaks at the memorial service of Senator John McCain at National Cathedral in Washington, Sept. 1, 2018.

Reporters noted it was the first time Obama had name-checked Trump since leaving office, although he's spoken with implicit criticism of Trump several times over the past year-and-a-half.

Obama tore into Trump and the GOP during the speech, criticizing Trump for "capitalizing on resentment" politicians have capitalized on. "I mention this just so when you hear how great the economy is doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started".

"In the end, the threat to our democracy doesn't just come from Donald Trump or the current batch of Republicans in Congress", he said.

Obama's return to the political spotlight came at the University of IL at Champaign-Urbana Friday. Speaking to college students, Obama called Trump out, stating: "You happen to be coming of age during one of those moments [backlash against progress]". Obama is likely to be less helpful in some of the most competitive Senate races playing out in states Trump won.

This post has been updated with additional comments from Obama's speech.

"Demagogues promise simple fixes for big problems", Obama said, swiping at Trump.

Obama is also planning campaign trips to Pennsylvania in September, an Obama official said, as well as a NY fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, an organization led by former Attorney General Eric Holder, Obama's longtime friend.

"There is no one else in the Democratic Party that is able to focus people's attention on an issue the way that he can", said Patrick Rodenbush, the communications director for the Holder group, for which Obama recently sat to shoot a promotional video.

I would not be surprised if Obama - as long as he is in IL - does some campaigning with Democratic governor nominee J.B. Pritzker.
