Massachusetts State Police urged all residents with homes serviced by Columbia Gas in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover to evacuate Thursday afternoon, snarling traffic and causing widespread confusion as residents and local officials struggled to understand what was happening.

Lawrence General Hospital said it was treating 10 victims, including at least one in critical condition.

As of 3 p.m., he said the company had shut off gas to over 3,200 customers - over 1,800 in Lawrence and around 700 each in North Andover and Andover. It was not immediately clear if any of those were from Andover.

ANDOVER - Dozens of explosions, apparently triggered by a natural gas pipeline rupture, rocked three communities near Boston on Thursday, injuring at least six people and prompting the evacuation of hundreds, local officials said. "At peak, 18 fires were burning at the same time", city police said.

"Cases range from smoke inhalation to traumatic blast injuries", the hospital said, adding that one patient had been taken to another hospital.

Nam says he ran downstairs and saw that his boiler was on fire.

Emergency response workers from surrounding communities worked through the night to help extinguish fires and care for the injured.

The three communities, near the New Hampshire border, together have more than 146,000 residents. State police received between 60 and 100 reports of fires and gas explosions in the Merrimack region. Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera said residents in the southern part of the city had been asked to leave their homes whether or not they were Columbia Gas customers, due to planned power cuts.

Columbia had announced earlier Thursday that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighbourhoods across the state, including the area where the explosions happened.

State Police say they have confirmed fires at 39 locations but warn the number will grow.

More than 70 gas explosions sparked blazes across three communities as crews scrambled to douse the flames and shut off gas and electric lines to prevent further damage.

Twenty to 25 homes were on fire in Lawrence, said Joseph Solomon, the police chief in nearby Methuen.

He said there were so many fires "you can't even see the sky".

A middle school in North Andover and a senior center in Andover were set up for evacuees, according to state police.
