Osaka powers into U.S. Open semis by routing Tsurenko

Kei Nishikori will contest a third US Open semi-final after defeating Marin Cilic in a topsy-turvy repeat of the 2014 final.

Nishikori rallied to beat Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted 4 hours, 8 minutes. It wasn't the cleanest of matches as the grueling heat at Arthur Ashe Stadium seemed to force both competitors into a slew of mistakes over the course of the four-plus hour match.

The only previous time the pair had played had been in the very different environs of the 2014 ITF $25,000 event in Irapuato, Mexico; back then, a 16-year-old Osaka had taken the match 6-4, 6-3. He started to regain his form in the spring, was back up to the No. 21 seed for his return to Flushing Meadows, and awaits either No. 6 Novak Djokovic or unseeded John Millman on Friday.

Up next up for Osaka will be the victor of the evening match between 2017 runner-up Madison Keys, who at 14 is the highest seed left in the women's draw, and Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

And it is also the first time a Japanese man and woman have made the semi-finals of the same Grand Slam after Naomi Osaka won her quarter-final earlier today.

Naomi Osaka of Japan in her quarterfinal match against Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine at Arthur Ashe Stadium during the U.S. Open tennis tournament in NY on Wednesday.

Nishikori won the opening two games of the third to make it six games in a row before surviving six deuces to come through a marathon sixth game.

She was quickly down two more breaks at 4-0 before squandering three break points in the sixth game as Osaka glided into a maiden semi-final at the Slams.

Colin Kaepernick: Quarterback is the face of new Nike campaign
Kaepernick contends the owners violated their collective bargaining agreement with players by conspiring to keep him off teams. They even came up with and announced a new national anthem policy earlier this offseason, but the move was swiftly criticized.

The 20-year-old Osaka said she was nervous, claiming to be "freaking out inside" - though it certainly never showed.

She raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and then 4-0 in the second against the shaky Tsurenko, who finished with more unforced errors than points in her first major quarterfinal.

Osaka was an easy victor in her quarterfinal, eliminating unseeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 in all of 57 minutes.

Now, Osaka is one of those players on TV - and seeing the same experience from the other side is proving to be just as cool. She won 20 of her 22 first serves, and she broke Tsurenko's serve five times.

Keys punched her ticket with a victory over Carla Suarez Navarro on Wednesday.

The speedy win over Tsurenko was the third time Osaka has wrapped up victory in under an hour in NY and should allow her to be fresh for Thursday's semi-final.

Keys was the runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the U.S. Open in 2017, then lost to Stephens in the French Open semifinals this year.
