Paul Pogba Told By Mourinho He Will Never Captain Man United Again

Reports began to circulate prior to United's disappointing 8-7 penalty shoot-out defeat to Derby County in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday that Pogba - who was rested - had been relieved of the role. "We are here to attack", Pogba told the media after the match. However, he has now suggested that criticising Mourinho was not his intention.

Pogba has been the regular stand-in skipper for United when captain Antonio Valencia is absent - as was the case last week in the 3-0 Champions League success at Young Boys, a match in which the former Juventus man scored twice.

The 25-year-old midfielder was heavily linked with an exit from the club in the summer, with Barcelona reportedly targeting United's club-record signing.

"The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore", Mourinho told Sky Sports.

The player and manager have seemed increasingly at odds over recent months, and on Saturday Pogba launched a not-too-subtle attack on his coach by urging United to change their style and "attack, attack, attack".

Jose Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba has been stripped of the vice-captaincy at Manchester United, but insists they have not fallen out.

Those comments are understood have got under Mourinho's skin, while Pogba took umbrage at the way they were reported. "In this moment, you don't even have the possibility of, after a draw, playing 30 more minutes - you go straight to a penalty shootout which obviously is a 50-50 situation". That's my way of thinking - we should move better, we should move more, yeah.
