Haitian representatives on Sunday said that at least 12 people died and 188 were injured in a 5.9-magnitude quake that devastated the northern portion of island on Saturday abandoning a space of mangled and devastated buildings and a petrified populace.

A strong aftershock sent panicked residents fleeing into the streets on Sunday - hours after a 5.9-magnitude quake killed at least 12 people along Haiti's northwest coast. The quake was 7.3 miles (11.7 kilometers) below the surface.

The president had urged the population to "keep calm", adding that "the system of risk management and the regional directorates of civil Protection are on alert to assist people in the affected areas".

The quake was felt in Port-au-Prince and in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Haiti's Nord-Ouest department is the poorest part of the impoverished country, with many isolated areas due to the dire state of the roads.
