Her whereabouts remain unknown.

This is with reference to a source the newspaper writes South China Morning Post. No reason was given for any potential investigation into the official.

Meng Hongwei's wife reported Friday that she had not heard from her 64-year-old husband since the end of September, when he left Lyon, France, where Interpol is based, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details of an ongoing investigation.

The probe was opened by the office of Lyon's prosecutor, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the status of the case is confidential.

At first it was unclear exactly where the man disappeared, but a source in the European country, reported that "he disappeared not in France".

Interpol said it was aware of reports in connection with Meng's "alleged disappearance". "This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China", it said on Twitter.

Before being elected head of Interpol in November 2016, Meng was vice minister of public security in China.

He later returned to the question she had asked him about Kavanaugh in which he defended his nominee to the Supreme Court again. The transcript issued hours later omitted Vega's word " thinking " and showed Trump saying, 'I know you're not thanking '.

According to Meng's bio on Interpol's website, he has nearly 40 years of experience in criminal justice and policing, during which he dealt with issues related to legal institutions, narcotics control, counter-terrorism, border control, immigration and worldwide cooperation.

Since Meng continued to hold positions in the security establishment concurrently with his role as Interpol president, that may have placed him under additional pressure.

China Daily emphasized the potential boost to China's recent clampdown on corruption, noting that China had increasingly worked with Interpol to pursue "China's 100 most-wanted fugitives suspected of corruption".

Such actions would be contrary to Interpol's mission statement: "Action is taken within the limits of existing laws in different countries and in the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights".

In July a year ago, Meng gave a speech on the importance of cracking down on cyber crime which observers said might reflect China's views on the issue.

But Interpol walks a fine line between its noble mission - facilitating worldwide police cooperation - and the politics and policies of some of its member countries. Its president heads the executive committee, which guides Interpol's priorities and strategy.

So far, neither the public security ministry nor the foreign ministry in China has commented.
