Jon Lester Has NSFW Response About Cubs Season Following Loss to Rockies

After the Cubs failed to stop the Brewers through 162 games, a Game 163 was needed to decide a champion. The batting order is full of top-tier Major League Baseball hitters for the Cubs, and yet they struggled mightily on offense at different times this year.

The Royals may have missed the playoffs by a country mile, but their former players popped up in some key moments in Tuesday night's National League Wild Card Game. Gore, Baez and Albert Almora Jr. then struck out, bringing a marathon game and a hard season to a fitting end.

But once again it came down to the Cubs' on-again, off-again, flickering lineup in the high-stakes, loser-out wild-card game against the Rockies on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

The Rockies and Cubs battled in extra innings, but neither offense could get going until the Rockies struck in the 13th inning. As a member of the Athletics, Lester started the one-game Wild Card playoff game against the Royals in Kansas City, where he was charged with six runs in 7 1/3 innings in a 9-8 loss.

Lester stranded LeMahieu at third base, then allowed only three more hits - including doubles by Matt Holliday and Story - before leaving for a pinch hitter in the last of the sixth, still down just 1-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Scott Oberg struck out Albert Almora Jr.to officially end Chicago's season. The 34-year-old won two World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 and 2013 as the ace of their staff and also has experienced plenty of early exits.

The Cubs had two chances to get it done on their home field, and they couldn't do it.

Rizzo's spot came up twice more in the game with Gore striking out both times, including leading off a 1-2-3 13.

Don't blame the wild card format for the fact that the Cubs won't be playing in a postseason series this year.
