Some of its greatest accomplishments include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity (and sequel) and Tyranny.

According to a report from Kotaku's Jason Schreier, technology titan Microsoft is in talks to acquire independent development house Obsidian Entertainment.

The Irvine, California-based studio has always been beloved by RPG fans, but has often faced financial strains, almost going out of business in 2012 before it signed a deal for an online tank game and launched a Kickstarter for the isometric throwback that would become Pillars of Eternity.

Continuing the no comment game is a representative from Private Division; a 2K Games label that was reportedly set to publish an upcoming Obsidian project.

If the rumors are true, it would mean that one of the most well-respected RPG developers would come under the banner of Microsoft.

Microsoft has kept Minecraft multiplatform, even enabling cross-play between Switch and Xbox One players, but console makers usually buy studios with the intent for those studios to make games for their consoles, not the competition.
