The limousine that crashed in upstate New York on Saturday, killing 20, failed inspection last month and its driver was not properly licensed, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday (Oct 8).

- Relatives of the limousine driver involved in a crash that killed 20 people in upstate NY said Tuesday they believe he was unwittingly assigned an unsafe vehicle.

The SUV-style stretch limousine was reportedly carrying a party on the way to a wedding reception when it collided with the other vehicle.

State police confirmed Sunday that the death toll was 20 and said the crash involved two vehicles.

He added, "It's not supposed to be on the road".

In total, 17 passengers died when a man who lacked the appropriate license to operate a limo crashed one into a parked auto on Saturday afternoon.

The limousine, built from a 2001 Ford Excursion, ran a stop sign at a T-shaped intersection at the bottom of a hill and slammed into an unoccupied SUV.

Palfy said his A1's vehicles are inspected routinely by the company and randomly by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

His stepson, Cicero Richards, told the Daily News that Lisinicchia had been hesitant to go out on the job on Saturday because of Prestige vehicles' junky nature.

They were headed for an upstate NY brewery but never made it, officials said.

Prestige Limousine issued a statement Monday expressing condolences to victims' families and saying it was conducting "a detailed internal investigation", while also meeting with state and federal authorities, according to The New York Times.

Amy Steenburg was also a newlywed.

Investigators were determining whether the regulations for limousines, whose passengers are not required to wear seat belts, are adequate. "On top of that we do our own background check", Velastegui said.

"They were wonderful girls", said their aunt, Barbara Douglas.

∫ Media reports from central NY have also identified another one of the victims of the crash - one of the two pedestrians standing outside the Apple Barrel.

"One just got married and that's what this was: her new husband was giving her a surprise birthday party", she told the New York Post.

"They now have no parents", Douglas said. She was one of the four sisters killed.

"There were witnesses on the scene, but just from the evidence discovered at the crash, it was apparent that this was the direction of travel and what happened", New York State Police First Deputy Superintendent Christopher Fiore said during a Saturday news conference, according to the Washington Post.

"Twenty fatalities is just horrific", NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters Sunday.

All 18 passengers inside the limousine, as well as the two pedestrians, were killed in the crash, making it the deadliest transportation-related accident in the US since 2009, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. All 18 people in the limo, including the driver, were killed.

Investigators continue to investigate what may have caused the crash today.

They have been described by their family as the "Four Musketeers".

Speaking through tears on the telephone, Valerie Abeling said her 34-year-old niece Erin Vertucci was among the victims, along with Vertucci's newlywed husband, 30-year-old Shane McGowan.
