Rescues, damage in Florida after hurricane — WHAT’S HAPPENING

Hurricane Michael has left a wake of destruction after it made landfall in Florida on Wednesday. The hurricane hit the Florida Panhandle as a category 4 storm. The storm is now moving at 21 miles per hour.

"Today is the day".

Waves of search and rescue teams are fanning out across the Florida Panhandle looking for people who rode out Hurricane Michael.

Wakulla County issued a dire warning, saying it won't open any of its shelters - because they're safety-rated only for storms up to Category 2 strength, WFSU reports.

Michael has continued up the America's southeast, dumping heavy rains and spreading flash flooding misery as far away as Virginia.

Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tweeted late Thursday morning that President Donald Trump granted a request for federal assistance for 14 counties: Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla. At least six people died, according to officials. "It looks like another big one".

And Michael also was deadly, both in Florida and beyond. Scientists say global warming is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme weather, such as storms, droughts, floods and fires, and Michael was fueled by abnormal water temperatures in the Gulf - 4-to-5 degrees above the historic norm for this time of year.

"But water levels in some parts of the eastern Florida Panhandle coast will still be high enough to overwhelm the dunes, which are relatively low and narrow".

The storm's winds partially demolished some structures in Panama City and stripped off roofs. Boats once docked in the canal have been pushed far up onto the land, and much of what would normally be on land floats in the canal. The governor has declared a state of emergency in 35 counties and is stressing that residents should "absolutely" evacuate if ordered to. "We'll see winds start to diminish after midnight tonight as the storm moves away". "This is one of the most powerful storms".

Schools and state offices in the area are to remain shut this week.
