Two envelopes containing ricin are intercepted at the Pentagon

Two envelopes suspected of containing ricin poison, one addressed to Defense Secretary James Mattis, were identified in the Pentagon's Central Processing Center, according to a us official.

The mail distribution center where the mail arrived and was flagged isn't in the Pentagon but nearby, the officials said.

A Defense Department official said the packages were addressed to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations. The envelopes were turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for further analysis.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the Pentagon built a massive underground remote processing facility on the west side of the building to screen all deliveries, including mail, into the building.

All US Postal Service mail received at the Pentagon mail screening facility on Monday is now under quarantine and poses no threat to Pentagon personnel, according to Pentagon spokesperson Col. Rob Manning.

Ricin is found naturally in castor beans but it takes a deliberate act to convert it into a biological weapon.

"It would take a deliberate act to make ricin and use it to poison people", the CDC says on its website. If ingested, it can cause nausea, internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines and ultimately organ failure. "As this is ongoing, we will have no further comment".

The Secret Service says they also intercepted a suspicious envelope that was addressed to President Donald Trump and the White House.
